Summary

Description
English: Flag of Georgia — construction sheet
Date
Source

Own work. Geometry is based of of the official government construction sheet found at State Symbols of Georgia November 14, 2018. Some of the dimensions on that sheet have been ignored due to inconsistencies. It is not physically possible to create a flag that perfectly matches the official construction sheet. If the four arc dimensions (.54, 1.04, .74, and 1.09 units) are applied as per spec, then two mathematical inconsistences are exposed:

  • The width of the Bolnisi crosses will be an irrational number that is approximately equal to 0.4091974026 units. This does not match the labeled value of 0.4 units.
  • The distance between the inner corners on each cross will be approximately 0.1025284814 units which does not match the labeled value of 0.1 units.

Both inconsistencies needs to be resolved before attempting to draw the flag. One must choose an option:

  1. Use the specified arc dimensions and simply ignore the specified width and internal dimensions of the crosses.
  2. Use the specified arc radii and the specified cross dimensions, and then recalculate the location of the arc centers.
  3. Use the specified arc center and the specified cross dimensions, and then recalculate the arc radii.

Starting with the 2nd revision of this Wikimedia construction sheet, we are using option #1 from the list above. Using this option it is possible to draw the flag without actually knowing or caring about the width and internal dimensions of the crosses.

All the numbers have been scaled by 100 to reduce the use of decimals.

  • The distance between the cross center and the large arc center is set to 109.000.
  • The distance between the cross center and the small arc center is set to 74.000.
  • The radius of the large arc is set to 104.000.
  • The radius of the small arc is set to 54.000.
In spite of not needing to know the width of the crosses, we have elected to calculate and display it on the construction sheet; this is done only for the sake of clarifying that the width is not equal to 40 and it is not a rational number.
