§ 19. 1. James had 63 cents and his father gave him 35 cents; how many cents had he then? Place the units and the tens of one number under the units and the tens of the other, so that units may stand under units, and tens stand under tens. SOLUTION - Write the numbers as in the margin. Draw a line under these figures. Then say, 5 units and 3 units are 8 units; write 8 in the units place under the line. 3 6 3 tens and 6 tens are 9 tens; write 9 in the tens 35 place under the line, and you have 98 cents and - the work is complete. Answer 9 8 cents.
2. There is 1 bird on one branch 4 on another and 2 on another; how many birds on all the branches? Ans. 7.
