The two tables listed above are meant only to emphasize the existence of numerous sounds in Konkani, which, for the most part, require various numerals to be assigned to the Tamil letters in order to get the same sounds. The tables above should not be memorized by the reader in order to get along with the vocabulary, The purpose of this section has been to introduce conventions for various letters used in Konkani, in the Tamil script. It is enough that the reader grasp the number assigning scheme shown in order to proceed with the vocabulary. The above tables assume the fact that the reader is already familiar with Devanagari and Tamil scripts.
The very purpose of this vocabulary is to lay thrust upon making the Tamil as readable as possible in using Konkani words. Hence, appropriate symbols have been added here, in addition to the numbers, whenever the need arises.
1. STARTING A TAMIL SCRIPT REPRESENTATION OF A KONKANI WORD WITH A DOT ON TOP
The Tamil script used for writing standard Tamil does not make use of letters with a dot on top at the beginning of a word. In other words, மெய்யெழுத்து characters are avoided at the start of a word, in most cases. In this vocabulary however, such conventions followed in Tamil do not apply owing to the fact that the Konkani language words written in Tamil script would give a pronunciation that is not intended. For example, the word प्रश्ण is written ப்₁ரஷ்₁ண.
2. REPRESENTATION OF NASALIZATION
Nasalization is a distinguishing factor of the Konkani language, especially when compared with Tamil. Konkani has greater nasalized sounds than Tamil, which renders typical Tamil nasalization consonants such ங and ஞ largely inadequate to represent the large number of situations where types of nasalization that usually accompany a word.
